Countries should share archives: KL
KUALA LUMPUR - MALAYSIA believes all countries should cooperate with any nation seeking to refer to old documents to resolve international disputes.

Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister Shafie Apdal said all countries with archive facilities should ensure they do not deny others the right to make territorial claims.

'If the European countries could cooperate in many international disputes, why couldn't Asean countries provide such cooperation to its partners in the grouping?' he told reporters yesterday.

He was commenting on the statement by National Archives director-general Sidek Jamil that Malaysia had no problems in referring to old documents related to its history from foreign countries, except with a neighbouring country that would refuse to share the same information.

Datuk Seri Shafie said he had asked Mr Sidek to raise the issue at the ongoing 16th International Congress on Archives.

He urged the international community to cooperate by sharing information to resolve international disputes for world peace.
