问世间情为何物 直教人生死相许

Saturday, March 07, 2009

I am no atheist.

I have read the bible, I have gone to churches. I have no issues with christianity, but I have issues with christians, or at least, the self-proclaimed christians.

I'm a people-person and naturally I'm not compelled nor am I content to have just His company for an eternity. Should it be that simple, in the sense that you would be saved if you accept Jesus, and the promise of eternal life in heaven holds true, I see no point in going to heaven because there are simply too many people of lousy character going there - this is definitely no incentive for me to get 'saved'. In fact it's a major disincentive. I need good people, people of character around me.

Proverbs 16:2 (NKJV)
All the ways of a man are pure in his own eyes,
But the LORD weighs the spirits.

So who are we to judge you say? Well, let us not judge then. Simply, are all christians good? Logically speaking there would probably be the same proportion of 'good' and 'bad' people in any religion. Would it then not make more sense to go to 'hell' then, given that christians stand at only about 33% of the world's population?

It's no news that we are living in a time of decay. And what irks me are the false people that calls themselves christians, so loudly and proudly. Factoring into account people who are 'christians' because they were simply brought up as one, people who are 'christians' with the intention of hoarding social capital, people who turn 'christians' out of lust. We are all aware of the many other reasons, the wrong reasons that people become 'christians', or more correctly, go to church.

Let us also not forget the christians who are strong in their faith but carry a holier-than-thou aura. But were they not instructed against that?

Matthew 6:5 (NKJV)
“And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.

So, are they any less of sinners than non-christians? I wouldn't know, but it would be sorely disappointing if God places them in higher regards than good, helpful, kind-hearted, non-christians.

Matthew 6: (NKJV)
But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.

What does it mean to be a christian? Does it translate to church-goer? Or does it show that you've accepted Jesus? Can one simply live a Christ-like life?

So why can't people be closet christians, simple, down to earth and good people? Why the need to proclaim one's faith? Can't people accept Jesus and simply be good and true (Christ-like) people? Is namesake that important? Why the need to go to churches of decadence?
